Abstract:
Using impulsive stimulation we investigated bacterial chemo-response to a trace amount of chemoattractants. We show that enteric E. coli bacterium is capable of single molecular detection, and it takes one to two binding events to trigger a (de)phosphorylation cascade. Such behavior is consistent with the bacterial chemotaxis network being a high-gain device. However, it is unclear how the network discriminates background noises under the high-gain operation.
