Abstract :
The star formation process from gravitational collapse of the diffuse interstellar medium implies a density amplification by tens of orders of magnitude. The relevant timescale being a few million years, such processes are not readily observable and only snapshots are available. Some observed statistical properties of the interstellar medium and those of the populations of prestellar cores and stars will be presented in this talk. The nature vs. nurture problem, that is, whether stellar properties are determined by large scale environment or local physics, has long been debated. I will discuss some of our current understanding of the star formation process and its implication on the present day Universe.
